Men’s Hat Size Chart

Hat sizes come from one measurement: the circumference of your head just above the ears and eyebrows. Enter it in inches or centimetres and the calculator gives your fitted hat size (such as 7⅜), letter size, metric size and UK size, and shows what fits best for fitted caps, adjustable caps, fedoras, beanies and more.

US fitted hat sizes are roughly the head’s diameter in inches: the circumference divided by π and rounded to the nearest eighth. Metric sizes are simply the circumference in centimetres. UK sizes run about an eighth smaller than US sizes for the same head. Letter sizes vary by brand; treat them as a guide.

How to measure your head

  1. Use a soft tape measure (or a piece of string and a ruler).
  2. Place it around your head about ⅛ inch (3 mm) above the ears and across the middle of the forehead, just above the eyebrows.
  3. Keep it level and snug but not tight — where a hat would sit.
  4. Measure twice and use the larger measurement.
  5. If you have thick hair or wear your hair up, measure the way you’ll usually wear the hat.

Fit by hat style

StyleFit advice
Fitted baseball capUse your exact size; many brands also sell S/M, L/XL flex-fit sizes
Adjustable cap (snapback, strapback)Usually one size fits about 21¾–23⅞ in
Fedora, trilby, felt hatsOrder your size; a snug fit is secure; sizing tape can reduce a loose hat slightly
Straw hats (panama)Choose your size or slightly up — straw does not stretch
Beanies and knit hatsStretch to fit most heads; check length for slouchy styles
Flat capsSized like fitted hats; a fraction larger is comfortable
HelmetsFollow the maker’s chart; safety depends on a correct fit

Between sizes?

Choose the larger size for firm hats that won’t stretch, and add a strip of hat sizing tape or foam behind the sweatband if it is slightly loose. Felt and wool hats can sometimes be stretched a little by a hatter. A hat that is too tight causes headaches and leaves a red mark; one that is too loose blows off in the wind.

Worked example

A head that measures 23 inches (58.4 cm) gives 23 ÷ π = 7.32, which rounds to 7⅜ — letter size L, metric 58 and UK 7¼. For a fitted baseball cap, order 7⅜; for an adjustable cap, any standard size will fit; for a straw panama, 7⅜ or 7½ if between.

Hat care tips

Why sizes differ between brands

Hat sizes are measured at the inside of the sweatband, but crown shape, sweatband thickness and the material all change how a hat feels. Many heads are more oval than round, so a long-oval head may find one brand’s 7⅜ snug at the front and back while another fits perfectly. Stretch fabrics in flex-fit caps cover a range of sizes, while stiff straw and felt have almost no give. When a brand publishes its own chart, trust it over a general chart like this one.

Adjusting a hat that does not quite fit

ProblemFix
Slightly looseAdd hat sizing tape or a foam strip behind the sweatband
Slightly tight felt hatA hatter can stretch it a little with steam and a hat stretcher
Tight capTry the next size or a flex-fit/adjustable style
Hat sits too highUsually too small — go up one size
Hat drops over the eyesUsually too large — go down one size or add tape

Sizes for common cap styles

Many flex-fit caps come in S/M (about 6⅞–7¼) and L/XL (about 7⅛–7⅝), and some ranges add XL/XXL for 7⅝–8. Snapback and strapback caps usually adjust from about 21¾ to 23⅞ inches. Knit beanies stretch across a wide range, though very large heads may prefer “tall” or “XL” beanies for enough depth.

Kids’ and women’s hat sizes

The same measuring method and conversion work for everyone. Children’s heads typically measure 18–21 inches, and women’s hats are often sized in the same inch or centimetre system, sometimes with letter sizes that run smaller than men’s. Always check the brand’s chart.
